What is Trust

I have written this poem in response to the erosion of trust in civil society, not just in the UK but all over the world. It is one in a series of works which I have published on the theme of trust in our leaders/governments (or lack of it).  I believe it is also relevant on a personal level. I hope you like it.

What is trust

Trust is the belief in the reliability, truth or ability of something or someone,

It cannot be given it can only be won.

Trust is built, it is earned and is easily lost,

It comes in different forms but always with a line that cannot be crossed.

It can be found in the space that exists between words,

In deeds and actions that can be seen, not just heard.

Trust once broken, although smoothed over, is never the same,

It might seem okay but the hidden cracks for certain will remain.

So don’t take it for granted and guard it with care,

For trust is something of real value and is not easy to share.

It not only affects the way that we act,

Trust is the glue of society, and that is a fact.
