Say what you will the countryside is still being built over,
From Inverness all the way down to the white cliffs of Dover.
Jack Hargreaves’s will be turning in his grave, that is for sure
When he compares what we have now to that we had a few years before.
We need more houses to provide homes for us all,
But do we need to build them so grand and so tall?
Five bedrooms three baths and a utility to boot,
Three bedrooms one bath would well enough suit.
That is not where the profit is the developers say,
But it will leave more room for growing food and silaging the hay.
What about water and the sewerage as well,
They pump it into rivers and your nose it can tell,
It’s not treated or ready to go into the stream
The fish start to die, it is the end of Jacks dream
We are an island with limited space,
Think about just how many we can fit into this place,
Innovation and guile are what is called for,
Not building little palaces with a pool and dance floor.
So if we want to enjoy this land beautifully green,
Do not build over it or no more will it be seen,
The fauna and flora that balance our lives,
We need more pollinating bees secure in their hives.
Make people smile and wipe away their sad frown
So let us do some thinking and not just build out of town
