Don’t Let Go

They wanted someone who wasn’t in a rush,

someone who could sit with them in quiet and not make a fuss.

Someone who could watch the sky turn from grey to bright,

and think that doing nothing was kind of just right.

But people passed by, again and again,

some looked straight through them, and caused them some pain,

People didn’t stop and never not stay

So they got used to being waved aside in that dismissive cruel way.

So they stopped expecting more than what they knew,

kept their head down, found small things to do.

They didn’t dwell on it or ask life why,

just lived the days as they came passing by.

Then one day someone slowed, then came to a stop,

met their eyes without looking away or their gaze to drop

A quiet smile, a nod that felt the same,

and then a simple, easy, quiet spoken name.

They met for a meal, nothing dressy or grand,

just time passing easy, just being as life had planned.

Not much was said, but nothing felt spare,

it worked because they both were there.

Something settled, without demand or show,

no need to rush it, they both just seemed to know

So they let it be, to let it grow,

and chose, without saying, simply not to let go.
