Today is yesterday’s tomorrow,
Whilst today is tomorrow’s yesterday.
Only one really exists,
And that is today.
At any moment in time
I exist only in that moment,
In that space,
Between what has been
And what has yet to be.
When tough times gather
Like dark clouds on the horizon,
The future becomes a place
Where fear constructs its own narrative
And yesterday becomes a courtroom
Where regret gives its evidence.
And you find yourself guilty.
I revisit old wounds,
Searching for answers
In conversations long finished,
In roads not taken,
In words I wish I had spoken.
Yet the past cannot hear me,
No matter how often I call its name.
I stare towards tomorrow,
Trying to calculate every possibility,
Every danger,
Every loss that might arrive.
Yet tomorrow remains silent,
Keeping its secrets
Beyond the reach of my worry.
And so I am left with today.
Not because today is easy,
Nor because today’s burdens are light,
But because today is the only place
Where I can physically change anything.
The pain may have come from yesterday,
The fear may belong to tomorrow,
But courage can only live now.
In this breath. In this step. In this choice to continue.
I do not need to carry
The whole of my future today.
I do not need to repair
The whole of my past.
I need only inhabit this moment,
However imperfectly.
For even in the darkest moments
Time moves quietly forward,
And the person who survives today
Will meet a different tomorrow.
Perhaps that is hope:
Not the certainty that everything will be well,
But the understanding that this moment is not forever,
That I am not trapped in who I was,
Nor condemned by what I fear.
I am here.
And while I am here, there remains the possibility of change, of healing, of another dawn
Waiting patiently to become reality, to become today.
