There is no such thing as nothing,
Because nothing does not exist,
There is never a nothing present,
It would just be too big a risk.
But something need not have meaning,
Just because something is there,
The stars do not owe us an answer,
And the universe, it need not care.
We search for a reason in living,
For purpose, for meaning, for plan,
As though there must be an answer,
To explain the existence of man.
But what if the silence is honest,
And meaning was never bestowed,
What if there isn’t a signpost,
Pointing us down the right rocky road?
Then nothing is lost by its absence,
No purpose was taken away,
Perhaps we create our own meaning,
In what we decide every day.
A kindness may matter to someone,
A love may outlive its embrace,
A poem that we leave on a page can still speak,
When we leave this cold place.
So maybe there is no contradiction,
In saying no meaning exists,
For meaning need not be eternal
To matter while something persists.
There is no such thing as nothing,
And no reason that something must be,
And somewhere between those two positions,
Is the meaning that matters to me.
